Final Report of the Search Committee for Vice Provost for Research

The search committee was convened in December, 1995, and completed its work in May, 1996. Members of the committee were Mark Liberman, Trustee Professor of Linguistics, Chair, succeeding Lee Peachey, Professor of Biology, who stepped down after being nominated for the position of Vice Provost for Research; Fred Allen, Bioengineering graduate student; David Balamuth, Professor of Physics and Associate Dean for the Sciences, SAS; Dawn Bonnell, Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering; Susan Gennaro, Associate Professor of Nursing; Jon Lindstrom, Trustee Professor of Neuroscience and Pharmacology; Daniel Malamud, Professor of Biochemistry, School of Dental Medicine; and Sankey Williams, Sol Katz Professor of Medicine and Chief, Division of General Internal Medicine, HUP. Linda Koons, Executive Assistant to the Provost, served as staff to the committee.

The search was a national one. The committee sought out faculty who had a strong record of research and scholarship sufficient to merit appointment as a full professor in an academic department of the University; knowledge of the operations and practices of a comprehensive research-oriented university; and proven administrative competence. It solicited nominations from faculty, deans, and center and institute directors; placed a notice in Almanac; and placed ads in The Chronicle of Higher Education and Science. It also interviewed a number of faculty and administrators about the role of the Vice Provost.

The committee received 98 nominations and applications--five were women and eight were minority candidates--and after considerable discussion and gathering of information on the strongest candidates, interviewed seven. It then forwarded a list containing the names of three men, including one external candidate, to Provost Stanley Chodorow, from which he subsequently appointed Ralph Amado, Professor of Physics, as Vice Provost for Research, effective July 1.
