Addendum to Penn-made Presidents (added February 20, 2007)

In addition to these two recent appointments to presidential positions, and Wharton Dean Patrick Harker’s appointment last semester as the University of Delaware’s next president (Almanac December 5, 2006) over the years, dozens of Penn-affiliated people have gone on to head other institutions of higher education—some directly from Penn, others later in their careers after having left Penn.

In 2006: last spring (Almanac May 23, 2006) GSE Dean Susan Fuhrman was chosen to become president of Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. In just the last few years, at least a dozen others preceded her.

In 2004: former provost Robert L. Barchi, became president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadephia; Paul Zingg, former assistant to the President (Hackney) and vice dean of the College, became president of California State University, Chico.

 In 2003: former director of SAS Development and coordinator of the College House Programs Peyton ‘Randy’ Helm, became president of Muhlenberg College in Allentown; Steven Poskanzer, former associate general counsel, became president of the State University of New York, New Paltz.

In 2002: former Law School Dean Colin Diver, became president of Reed College in Portland, Oregon; former EVP John Fry, became president of Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster; Frederick S. Osborne, former assistant professor and head of undergraduate sculpture, became president of Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut.

In 2001: former vice president and chief of staff Stephen D. Schutt, became president of Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Including the prior decades, there have been more than 100 faculty, deans, provosts, administrators and alumni who have spent their formative years here before becoming president of another institution, or, in some cases, institutions.

Addendum to Penn-made Presidents (added March 20, 2007)

In addition to the Penn-made presidents above, Dr. Lawrence M. Schall, J.D. ’78, Ed.D. ’03, former co-director of Penn’s Executive Doctorate Program and adjunct faculty member of Penn’s GSE, was named president of Oglethorpe University, in Atlanta, GA, in 2005.

Another Penn-educated person has recently been named a president—Dr. Elaine P. Maimon, earned her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in English, at Penn, and has been Chancellor at the University of Alaska at Anchorage since 2004, will become the president of Governors State University in University Park, IL, on July 1, 2007.

In addition to the numerous Penn-made Presidents listed above, Penn alumnus Vincent M. Maniaci was named president of American International College, in Springfield, MA, in 2005. He earned a doctorate in management of higher education from GSE.

Addendum to Penn-made Presidents (added May 8, 2007)

The following five Penn-made Presidents received their executive doctorates in higher education management from Penn GSE: Dr. Paul Hennigan, GSE ’05, president of Point Park University, Pittsburgh, PA; Dr. Dan Martin, GSE ’06, president of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Mount Vernon, OH; Dr. Michele Perkins, GSE ’07, interim president of New England College, Henniker, NH; Dr. Tim Ryan, GSE ’03, president of the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, NY; Dr. Jo Ann Rooney, GSE ’05, president of Spalding University, Louisville, KY.

Also, Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, who received his Ph.D. in demography and regional science from Penn in 1993, is president of the University of Liberia, Monrovia, Liberia,West Africa.

2012: Dr. Helen F. Giles-Gee, CW'72 GEd'73 Gr'83, President of the University of the Sciences, Philadelphia.

2009: Dr. Dennis Ahlburg, President of Trinity University

2009: Dr. Jo Ellen Johnson Parker, President of Sweet Briar College in Virginia effective July 1, 2009. Dr. Parker earned her doctorate in English literature from Penn in 1987.

2008:  Dr. Larry Kaiser, John Rhea Barton Professor and chairman, surgery, School of Medicine; president of University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
